After Katrina it was found that people will not evacuate their home and go to an emergency shelter unless they can take their pets with them.
Licking County C.E.R.T. and Licking County Red Cross have teamed up to create Pet Friendly Shelters in the event of a disaster situation in Licking County.

D.A.R.T.’S Main goals:
- Shelter pets for clients of Red Cross shelters
- Provide disaster animal education
- Evacuate pets from a disaster area
What we need:
Large Crates—collapsible wire crates preferred
Enclosed Utility Trailer
Dog leashes—Gently used or New
Disposable litter boxes
Dog collars—Gently used or New
Bite Gloves
Large Live Traps
Large 20ft Enclosed trailer - to make a mobile sheltering unit.
Small boat – to help evacuate pets during floods
Towels
Cleaning supplys
Recommended items for a basic Pet Emergency Kit
Food—At least one weeks worth. Rotate the food to prevent it from expiring.
Water—At least one weeks worth. Store the water in a dark area. Keep a small bottle of bleach to purify water.
Litter-Have a weeks worth of scoopable litter in a plastic jug.
Sanitation– Have a scoop and plastic bags
Cleaning Supplies- for cleaning crates and food bowls.
Photographs– Have recent photos of your pet for identification purposes.
Medication—Have at least two weeks of medication on hand.
Shot Records—Keep a copy of your pets medical records in your disaster kit.
Collar, leash, and tags– Make sure they fit properly, are in good working order, and updated.
Vet information– Have an emergency contact number for your vets office.
First Aid kit—Have a stocked kit that fits your pets needs.
Toys- Items that will keep your pet busy.
Cage– A way for you to secure your pet if you are displaced. A collapsible wire cage works best.
If you need to evacuate do not leave your pet behind. Do everything in your power to take your pet with you. Identify pet friendly hotels in your area or make arrangements with local boarding facilities.
